How did you get involved in Roller Derby?
Back in 2011; one of my best friends watched the film, Whip It, and (becoming instantly obsessed with the sport of roller derby) dragged me to a Golden City Rollers practice (then known as C-Max Roller Derby League). I took one look at the amazing skaters speeding around the track and crashing into one another and said, “There’s no way I can do this!”
14 years down the line – I can confidently say that I have never been happier to be so wrong in my life!
Proudest moment as a Derby Athlete so far?
As an athlete – having the honour of representing my country not once but coming up on three times at the Roller Derby World Cup!
As a coach – having skaters I taught at their very first lesson now being my teammates on Team South Africa. The pride and joy I feel in having the opportunity to witness and contribute to their journey are beyond words.
Favourite Positions: Blocker, Pivot & Jammer
Why I need your support:
Roller derby has truly shaped the person I am today. If you had told high-school Aimée that, as an adult, she would be playing a team sport 3 times a week willingly; she would have never believed you. If you had told high-school Aimée that she would learn to love her body and the incredible things it would achieve; she probably would have keeled over with incredulous laughter. And yet, here I am, 14 years into this journey, and roller derby has given me confidence, resilience, and an unshakable sense of community. It has taken me across the world, introduced me to lifelong friends, and taught me what it means to be a leader, a teammate, and a mentor.
Now, as I prepare to represent Team South Africa at the Roller Derby World Cup, I have the privilege of skating alongside some of the strongest, most dedicated athletes I’ve ever met. But getting to the World Cup is no small feat – we need support to make this dream a reality.
Travel, accommodation, and competition costs add up, and we rely on donations and sponsorships to make it possible. If you believe in the power of sport to change lives, to uplift and empower; I ask you to consider supporting me and my team on this journey. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us take the track and represent our country on the global stage.
