How did you get involved in Roller Derby?
I just wanted to learn how to roller skate again, then derby sucked me in with all its badassery! What an empowering, powerful, fun, strategic sport.
Proudest moment as a Derby Athlete so far? Making Team SA 🥹 scoring 4 points with my teamies on track for Iron Meisies against The Anguanas in Madrid.
Favourite Positions:Â Blocker & Jammer
Why I need your support:
Quad-skating has always been in my blood. As a tiny menace, my bestie and I would rip up the streets. Then life happened (you can’t skate on the ocean), priorities changed (90s goths don’t skate), I started a family and before I knew it, skating was a distant memory… until 2023.
I walked past a holographic pair of Impala’s in a surf store. IN MY SIZE. IN SOUTH AFRICA. Unheard of! Turns out, skating isn’t like riding a bike. I needed help.
I knew Cape Town Rollergirls offered a skate basics course, so I signed up. (I had a crush on all their roller derby teams, and knew about the sport for 7 years, but had convinced myself I was too old to play – never do that, btw).
The derby bug hit hard (duh), those negative thoughts flew out the window and after 2 years of endless encouragement and skill-sharing from my coaches and teammates, personal goal-setting, determination and cross-training, I’ve gone from ‘can’t stand up on skates’ to ‘representing South Africa at the 2025 Roller Derby World Cup’!
Thanks to my incredible derby fam, my emotional, physical and mental training needs are fully covered (IYKYK), but my financial needs still have a way to go.
As a single mom of two, living in a developing country with a 20.25% credit card interest rate (yikes), it’s incredibly tough for me to save anything after covering my day-to-day expenses. My travel and food cost estimate comes to €2,300 (about R44,000). This is my official public, pride-swallowing, on-my-knees plea to please help me in any way you can: cosmic vibrational cheerleading, direct financial contributions here or a quick share to help my story travel far and raise more awareness and funds.
Any extras I make will be donated to the rest of Team SA to cover all the other costs we’re fundraising for as a group.
Thank you from the bottom of my dark little derby-loving heart, forever and ever.
