Years playing Roller Derby: 14 months

How did you get involved in Roller Derby?
My partner bought my skates for Christmas because I was obsessed – I thought that would be SO FUN but I would be SO SHIT. I started lessons with CTR thanks to the universe and mutual friends. Skating then ignited an insane passion I didn’t think I would find in my 30s but there I was, anxious, in the middle of Covid, and finding a form of peace and exercise (ew?). One thing lead to another and I started reffing until one day I couldn’t watch from the sidelines anymore. I guess having brothers and growing up being tossed around on your parents’ bed under the guise of WWF preps one for this.

Proudest moment as a Derby Athlete so far? Honestly, every time I play and get over the anxiety I am proud of myself. But for bigger moments – getting our league to Spain and then playing at a crazy pace while still being able to try new things, and making this team. I would never have dreamed I would be here.

Why I need your support:
Listen. I’m just a cat lady who loves tea and getting her rents worth of not leaving the house. Yet. Somehow I have pulled myself consistently to skate practice. And Spain. And now I’m about to hit up Austria (that’s so far from my bed – about 12 972,7 km away).

I don’t even know where to begin, other than getting my team there is currently one of the biggest priorities in my life.

I’ve never been one to like sport, but derby has brought me to some of the most inclusive, supportive, empowering, strong, and brave people I know today. Every time I put my danger wheels on I know I will be ok – these are people I trust with everything. I get to have fun on track – I get to try new things – I get the amazing opportunity to PLAY ROLLER DERBY! I get to find out what my body and mind are made of, and this sport means so much to me now.

Now I get to represent the COUNTRY, playing ROLLER DERBY in the WORLD CUP. Please, re-read that. Again. Is that not absolutely insane??

I just need to get there – and this is where I really, really need you and your help 🙂 Any donation, any amount, any share, any support at either of our roller derby leagues, any and *every* bit helps us (and me) to get there. Austria, the Euro, is SO expensive but this opportunity comes around once every four years (when Covid isn’t around) and we are grabbing it and we are going to show up and we are going to make our country and all our moms who think we are absolutely batshit proud.
