Years playing Roller Derby: 11 years

How did you get involved in Roller Derby?
Moved to London on my own and was looking for a hobby to get me some friends (I’d obvs also seen Whip It like every other roller skater around town). Showed up to a New Skater session and fell in love.

Proudest moment as a Derby Athlete so far?
24 points and 2 apex jumps in one jam during a Five Nations game. I will never stop talking about it. Ever.

Jokes aside, being a roller derby athlete is so much more than performance on track. My proudest moments also include building the most epic New Skater Space with some incredible leaguemates and bringing in (& nurturing!) so much talent (on and off track) into our league. We wrangled the largest new skater intake in LRD history in 2024 and I am so proud of what we achieved – a solid foundation laid to not only future-proof our league but also provide a comfortable, encouraging, happy space for newcomers to our sport.

My off-track achievements also might include current reigning After Party Champ…

Favourite Positions: Pivot & Jammer

Why I need your support:
Holy moly we are going to the World Cup!

2025 will be my first time skating at the WC but I am no stranger to the hard work, determination and FUN involved. I started playing roller derby shortly after I moved to London from Joburg over a decade ago, and have been fortunate enough to train and play with and against some of the best teams in the UK and Europe over the last decade. It is an absolute joy to have the opportunity to skate for my home country and get to know the best skaters in SA at the same time.

My dad, in all his wisdom, always told me sport will change my life. I tried everything from cross-country running & high jump to tennis, swimming, cricket and field hockey. Nothing ever stuck (hockey did, kind of, until I became too cool for it at uni) because I either wasn’t any good at it, my friends weren’t interested in joining me, or I just felt out of place in the space – cue anxiety!

Enter Roller Derby circa 2014 – Dad was right, sport did change my life. & for the first time; I was good at it (not at first!), my (new) friends loved it as much as I do, and my god the sense of belonging was overwhelming.

Roller derby is addictive – you want to be better not only for yourself but for your teammates and leaguemates. This sport is not only a place you can play games – roller derby fosters a community spirit that I have not known in any other discipline.

No doubt travelling to Europe to represent our country is a true honour – but a pricey honour at that. From airfare and accommodation to uniform and kit costs, we are reaching out far and wide to kindly ask for any and all donations to help us on our way to our epic adventure in Austria.

If you / your organisation are able to spare any change (no matter how big or small) I promise to fly the South African flag higher than ever and make you proud. Help us put South Africa on the world map in a unique and inspiring way.

WE NEED YOU, and you need us too – you just don’t know it yet.
