How did you get involved in Roller Derby?
I was a medic providing medical coverage for one of the games way back in 2013/2014 and I was hooked. Joined as an NSO and a few years later, joined as a skater 🙂
Proudest moment as a Derby Athlete so far? Honestly, every time I get lead jammer I feel quite a bit of pride. I managed lead in Europe a number of times and those moments come when you’ve been working on a play and finally nail it!
Favourite Positions: Pivot & Jammer
Why I need your support:
Hi, I’m BB-Skate—Golden City Rollers jammer, Star Wars enthusiast, and proof that one bad decision (strapping wheels to my feet) can turn into the best thing ever.
My derby name comes from BB-8, the cutest and speediest and bestest droid in the Star Wars galaxy, and my number, 94, is a shoutout to the year I was born—and more importantly, the year South Africa became a democracy. Being a Born Free in South Africa means I grew up in a country that was finally moving forward, and I like to think I bring that same unstoppable energy to the track.
I first stumbled into roller derby about seven years ago while providing medical coverage for a bout. I had no idea what was happening, but I knew I wanted in. First, I NSO’d. Then I skated. Then I fell down a lot. Then I got up and became obsessed. Now, I live for the chaos, the camaraderie, and the excuse to legally knock people over at high speeds.
Derby didn’t just give me a sport—it rewired my brain. Once upon a time, I cared about being skinny. Now? I care about being strong, powerful, and faster than the blocker trying to murder me. Wanting to be a better jammer made me fall in love with fitness, and let’s just say I haven’t voluntarily skipped leg day since.
When I’m not skating, you’ll find me lifting heavy things, doing weird DIY projects, CrossFitting, painting, or making questionable life decisions that usually involve more tattoos or saying “yes” to ridiculous challenges. So far, I have no regrets (except maybe that one time I thought I could hockey stop in new wheels or that time I got clotheslined while jamming).
Derby isn’t just a sport—it’s a community, a second family, and, let’s be honest, a financially questionable life choice. Keeping this league alive takes time, effort, and, yes, donations from amazing people like you. If you’ve read this far, you’re already my favourite. Thanks for your support, and I hope to see you trackside soon!
